Clinton and Meta (Eisenhauer) Lawry's autobiography, genealogy, and family history. Great insight into their family's history and life as it was in the late 1800's and early 1900's. A lot of history of Boston, (Friendship) Maine, New England, the U.S., Canada (Nova Scotia), and the U.K.

I was recently thinking about Maine, having vacationed there in November, and the Lawry's came to mind. I remember Uncle Clint and Aunt Meta, my great grandmother's sister and brother-in-law, and their occasional visits to Russell St. in Arlington. I was only a toddler at the time but Uncle Clinton seemed fascinating and I remember him talking for long hours with my father and Uncle Bim (Inez Plummer's husband). I did remember that Clinton was a well-respected painter who had artwork around their homestead in Friendship, Maine. I began my search, trying to find any representation of his artwork on the web. Imagine my surprise upon finding this book.More families need to capture history like this. I regret that so much was lost in my own family because, as children, we never listened as closely as we should have. We have so many questions and very little to go on later in life after we've lost our elders.
The writing makes you realize how marvelously people communicated in that generation, writing letters and such on a regular basis, and how much we've lost in our own writing abilities. The history is fascinating (though it might have used more reference to what was going on in the big world as reference - a minor complaint) and I did learn some facts that hadn't been elaborated when I heard them as a child. For example, when Capt. Eisenhauer's boat was lost, I never realized that there was an account of how it happened. How horrible ! I was always simply told he was "lost at sea". True but not entirely complete.
Another bit of trivia but one that made me smile was an eerie connection. Clinton moved to Boston to live near Mary while she was teaching. Mary taught at the GLINES School in Somerville (which is no longer there). My mother, Clinton's grand-niece, married a Somerville Glines, Robert. The school Mary taught at was named for one of my father's ancestors, who had served on the first City Council in Somerville. Merely a coincidence but a fascinating one. I wonder if that ever came up amongst the family at one of those delicious Saturday dinners in Arlington.
One other complaint is that the Kindle edition is not oriented correctly. I was able to overcome that but I'm thinking that it could be corrected with some attention.
As a relative, it's priceless. Students of New England history, it's worth the read.
