In September 1666, one word was on everyon's lips. Fire. But not all attention was on the blaze that destroyed London. Just three weeks earlier, British ships had obliterated the Dutch town of Westerschelling and set 150 merchant vessels ablaze. In an atmosphere thick with rumour, many thought the Great Fire of London was caused by Britain's enemies, perhaps in revenge for Westerschelling. Perhaps they were right. In the weeks before London's burning, Sir Matthew Quinton, master of H.M.S. Sceptre, is recalled to a city seething with foreign plots and paranoia, and given a dangerous mission by the King. A secret quartet of terrorists is planning to destroy the capital, stir rebellion, open the way for invasion. Only Quinton can stop them.

J D Davies is the best new author in the nautical fiction genre. First of all, he writes about a period that has gotten little play, the Restoration Royal Navy and Anglo-Dutch Wars. So he is mining relatively new territory as compared to the done to death French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars. His stories are not only impeccably research historically, as Mr. Davies is an establish history professor and writer of non-fiction relating to Samuel Pepys and this period. He is excellent in his description of the nauticals---the lapses by other authors drive me nuts---but he also includes an element of "who done it" in every one of Mathew Quinton's Journals. Not only is does the erstwhile protagonist evolve from land lubber to competent captain, but he is also something of a sleuth/spy buster. This entire series is GREAT FUN and a wonderful read.

If you are looking for a Jack Aubrey knock-off, you will be disappointed. The series are more along the lines of Sabatini, Dumas, Perez-Reverte's Alatriste. He is livelier than Dumas, on part with Sabatini, probably better story-teller than even Perez-Reverte, though I have a particular fondness for all P-R writings.
Davies is not a history professor, as a reviewer states, but an independent (by now) researcher and scholar. He is one of the top 2-3 maritime historians and definitely the best specializing in the Restoration Navy and period. I have read all the history books that he has ever written - books and articles - and find them outstanding pieces of scholarship. They also happen to be very readable.
Mathew Quinton is an outstanding example of a period naval - or to use the correct contemporary term - sea officer. The books give excellent feel and sense of the times.
Naval battle descriptions perhaps need bit more work, but I love the series.
Wonderful continuation of a great naval story. Interesting mix of the burning of London with espionage and a great story! Can't wait for next novel in the Quinton series!
Great series of sea stories
Fast paced story about the great London Fire. Felt like you were in the midst of the fire.
Matthew Quincy sails again- Saving the Restoration Monarchy from itself.
Consistently as good as prior novels in this series, but if you are are new to JD Davis, best to start at the beginning with "Gentleman Captain".
Another successful volume of the Matthew Quinton series. Davies created another well-written part of the complex and entertaining story. He weaves the plot through historic events with an extensive vocabulary, good settings, and interesting characters.
Talk about melding fiction and reality, JD Davies is the best. I couldn't put it down. I know the "history" and found his way of rewrapping the stories totally enthralling. MORE MORE MORE ... stay away from the Tudors ... there are so many more Stuart stories to be told.
